Calcium and Your Kids

What’s so essential for your children’s bones and dental health?
It’s C - A - L - C - I - U - M. Yes, calcium, one of macro minerals needed in a large amount by the body.

This main mineral has several important functions. It is responsible in forming healthy bones and teeth. It also functions in controlling muscles contractions and relaxations, as well as transmitting messages through the nerves.

The best way to get calcium is by consuming foods that naturally contain calcium. A great variety of food can be your choices to provide in your children’s daily intake.

Below is the food list:

- yogurt, plain or mixed with fruit

- sardines

- cheddar cheese

- milk

- tofu

- salmon

- spinach

- broccoli

- soybean

If your children do not get adequate amount of calcium, they’ll suffer from a deficiency in three elements essential for maximizing the calcium absorption. They are magnesium (Mg), vitamin D, and vitamin C. Thus, a glass of orange juice is a great idea to improve the absorption.

Meanwhile, soft drinks, coffee and alcohol do the other way. If you have teens, beware with what they consume. They probably prefer those drinks instead of milk, which of course high in calcium.

Calcium deficiency can lead to osteoporosis later in life. It happens when dietary intake of calcium is low. The body then takes away so much calcium from the skeleton, and the bones will become weak and fragile.

However, getting too much calcium is not a good idea as well. Constipation is one of the effects.
